Job Title: Mechanical Engineer
Directly reports to: Senior Engineer

Location: Newcastle

Position Summary:

To support the Senior Engineers, Associates, and Directors in producing robust design solutions including drawing and written deliverables with moderate supervision.

Responsibilities and authority:

  • Supporting the Senior Engineers, Associates, and Directors in undertaking mechanical design and consultancy work, producing mechanical design drawings, calculations (using Hevacomp and IES software, etc), reports, specifications and schedules, systems design
  • Liaise with other design team members internal and external, represent the business at meetings where appropriate
  • Fulfil the technical responsibilities of a Mechanical Engineer including but not limited to:
      • Carrying out surveys of existing facilities and preparation of survey reports
      • Assisting with early-stage design works, load estimates and assessment of plant area spatial allowances
      • Provision of design calculations
      • Assisting in the development of design solutions to comply with all recognised standards and Building Regulations, and notably Part F/ Part L / Section 6 requirements, etc,
      • Assisting in the production of reports as required, including relevant supporting documentation required for BREEAM accreditation
      • Support project risk assessments to ensure safe installation and operation and in compliance with CDM legislation.
      • Production of CAD drawings and provision of all support to produce satisfactory detail drawings as required for tender, construction, or other purposes
      • Assisting in the production of project specifications and schedules, adapting standard specification information where possible
      • Attend and contribute to design team and project meetings
      • Assisting in undertaking site supervision duties as necessary to ensure works are installed in accordance with contract documentation and good engineering practice
      • Assisting in witnessing the testing, proving, and commissioning procedures of final installations as required, etc.
  • Contribute to ensure the application and maintenance of all Integrated Management System procedures
  • Carry out all personal management duties including weekly recording of man-hour commitments to individual projects
  • Assist in the development of trainee engineers
  • Comply with all security procedures and commercial in-confidence restrictions associated with work duties
  • Contribute to the maintenance of the highest possible standards of design by maintaining a good working knowledge of proven building services systems and new developments in Building Services Industry, including new legislation, standards and regulations, product development and new technology
  • Work to internal and external project programs effectively
  • Undertake all other duties as may be required to assist in the fulfilment of the primary objectives of the Senior Engineers, Associates, and Directors

Specific skills, knowledge, competencies and training


  • Ambitious self-motivated individual with good team ethic, looking to excel and aspire
  • Studying towards chartership and maintenance of CPD requirements
  • Competence in AutoCad and knowledge of Revit with the ability to produce neat and accurate technical drawings
  • Knowledge of energy and thermal modelling software such as IES
  • Good numeracy, literacy, and computing skills
  • Effective communication skills, notably with internal and external design team members
  • Ability to present and explain the thought process behind your own design work
  • Collaborative approach, working effectively with all others affecting or affected by your work


  • Competence in Revit

Education and Experience:

  • Engineering degree preferred. Minimum engineering HNC/D or equivalent qualification
  • Previous experience in a Building Services consultancy required
