New £4.4M Facility for Aberdeen University

Scientists uncovering the secrets of the world's deepest darkest oceans are looking forward to a dynamic future by celebrating the start of work on a new state of the art £4.4M facility.

Five decades of leading environmental research on the University of Aberdeen's Newburgh site will also be recognised at a special turf cutting ceremony taking place at Oceanlab, paving the way for Oceanlab 2.

Fifty years ago, University researchers moved into Culterty House at Newburgh - just adjacent to Oceanlab which opened in 2001 - with the aim of shaping our understanding of the natural environment.

The new build will provide specialised facilities for the study of global carbon cycles from estuaries to the deep sea; exploring what happens to matter when it sinks to the ocean floor.

Wallace Whittle are delighted to be providing full Mechanical & Electrical Consultancy duties as part of the retained Design Team who successfully completed Phase 1.

St James Quarter, Edinburgh

The St James Centre in Edinburgh, once voted one of the ugliest buildings in the U.K., is set for a £1bn overhaul after plans were revealed by owners Henderson Global Investors.

The plans would see the centre transformed from into the lynchpin of a new city quarter with retailers, hotels, apartments and offices. Public squares and rooftop gardens would also be a key feature of the scheme that is believed to be the largest redevelopment in Edinburgh's city centre for half a century.

Thousands of new jobs are expected to be created through the development, which would treble the existing amount of retail space at the centre and open up links with Princes Street, George Street and Multrees Walk.

Wallace Whittle have been appointed alongside architects bdp & Allan Murray Architects, the £850m proposals are based around a modern three-level, five storey galleria modelled on the city's famous Baroque-style crescents as well as similar developments in cities such as Milan.

The plans were revealed for the first time by Henderson Global Investors at the launch of an exhibition in the existing centre on Leith Street as part of an eight-week consultation period. Allan Murray described the ideas, which will see the entire complex, except the John Lewis building, torn down after nearly 40 years.

The unique project provides us with many challenges, not least in developing a common low carbon integrated energy strategy and currently we are looking at providing the entire site with energy including power, ventilation, heating and cooling from a central energy centre utilising CHP machines and Absorption & Electric Chillers.

With a 3 level 1600 space car park created below ground beneath the retail and leisure destinations it is important that we establish engineering solutions which operate efficiently without effecting other elements of the scheme aesthetically or with noise or odours.

The team based in our Edinburgh Office, less than 100 yards from the site, have been proactive and innovative in developing services which will provide a safe and comfortable environment in a sustainable and low carbon manner.

Proposals currently include up to 30 escalators and 25 lifts to transport the visitors and residents through the 18 or so levels of this diverse and exciting scheme.

HGI are confident that SJQ would attract key shops to the city, with the firm predicting that, if given the go-ahead, demolition could begin in 2010 with the quarter completed in 2015.

Riber Castle

Wallace Whittle have been appointed to provide design services for the redevelopment of Riber Castle, at Matlock in Derbyshire.

Riber Castle, located 200 metres above Matlock, was designed and built in 1862 by John Smedley from locally quarried Gritstone. Planning consent, for conversion of the English Heritage Listed Building, into twenty six luxury apartments, together with redevelopment of the former outbuildings and castle grounds to provide twenty further residences was granted following a Government Enquiry.

There are a number of ecological issues to be addressed as part of the redevelopment, due to bats and newts having taken up residence in the castle and grounds and work is currently in hand to safely relocate these protected species away from their current habitats, before the work of restoring the castle begins, which is currently scheduled for May 2008.

We are working with the developer on a number of sustainable and renewable energy proposals for the development, as part of our appointment.

New Horizons House, Aberdeen 26/09/2007

We are delighted to be working alongside Knight Frank and TCD Architects for Developer Seletar Shipping on this ambitious scheme to redevelop part of Aberdeen Docklands.

The development comprises around 46,500 sq ft of Grade A office space with integral car parking over six levels. The new open plan office accommodation will be available for lease in individual floor plates ranging from 7,500 sq ft to 14,000 sq ft or in combinations of up to a maximum of 46,500 sq ft. The 4th floor and ground floor space is already "under offer" and significant interest has already been expressed in the remainder, despite the lack of a formal marketing campaign.

Seletar Shipping is keen to ensure that the building is environmentally conscious and will incorporate energy efficient design to minimise the building's carbon footprint and recycling facilities for each floor. Additional features will include full curtain walling at 3rd & 4th floor levels incorporating a roof terrace to both floors, and a full height central atrium featuring a bespoke Helical staircase and water feature. There will also be a catering concession on the 2nd floor overlooking the entrance foyer.

The building will also be fully DDA compliant. Two levels of integral car park offer a generous car parking ratio of one space for every 350 sq ft.

New Horizons House is close to a range of amenities, including the bus and train station and the new Union Square Retail/Leisure Development, the Boulevard Retail Park and the Beach Leisure Centre. Seletar also provide a courtesy bus service which operates between the Waterloo Quay development and the city centre, for use of the occupiers of the development.

Peacock Visual Arts, Aberdeen 26/09/2007

Peacock Visual Arts in partnership with the city's arts education and arts development teams are currently developing schemes for a new 'iconic' building in Aberdeen's Union Terrace Gardens. Wallace Whittle are delighted to be working alongside internationally acclaimed Architects Brisac Gonzales who have been very clever and innovative with the design since the building not only shelves discretely into the existing gardens but will open access to the gardens up considerably in what has always been a sensitive yet neglected part of the city centre. The environmentally friendly building, which it is intended will harness geo-thermal and solar energy to heat it, will largely be built underground and be no higher than the height of the existing wall along Union Terrace. The council hopes this will create a thriving cultural quarter in the area, with the Art Gallery and His Majesty's Theatre both nearby.

ASDA Shaw in Oldham 26/09/2007

ASDA’s first 'green' store at Shaw in Oldham opened on 3rd August 2007.

The store is the first ASDA store to be constructed from a sustainable timber-frame and Wallace Whittle provided a number innovative design solutions to reduce carbon emissions. These solutions consisted of natural ventilation, north-lights and day-light linking to the sales floor lighting, which are predicted to reduce carbon emissions by 40% and provide a saving in energy costs in the order of £30,000 PA, when compared to a “standard” ASDA store.

Through a series of sensors located around the sales floor, the natural lighting levels achieved from the north-lights are monitored and the lighting levels are automatically adjusted to reduce energy consumption.

A thermodynamic model of the store was produced by Wallace Whittle, using IES modelling software which allowed the design solutions to be modelled and predictions of the carbon emissions and energy savings to be determined.

Heat from Rain - A West Coast Dream 26/09/2007

In 1991 Wallace Whittle designed the necessary Building Services for Islay's first indoor public swimming pool. Prior to this the hardy folk of Islay had to learn to swim in the sea, which was no doubt character building but a bit tough for our "soft" generation.

The building to house the pool was donated by the McTaggart family then owners of the neighbouring Bowmore Distillery one of the finest Islay Malts. The distillery engineers worked with ourselves to develop a heat recovery scheme utilising warm waste water which originated from Bowmore's private loch, from their processes which via a system of heat exchangers provided heat to the pool water.

This year we were invited back over to assist in engineering further enhancements to the scheme which has resulted in the system now heating pool water, hot water for showers and ventilation supply air. All now controlled from a sophisticated computer based Building Management System.
