This stunning new Medical Centre in Lathangie, a location just out with the main high street of Kinross in the Tayside area, is now open for business.
The low slung design approach is a signature of Kenneth Reid Architects healthcare projects allowing the premises to become domestic in appearance and further softened with the mix of materials and curved shapes. It is firmly a contemporary design sitting within a green field site, it has a backdrop of tree belts within a stream setting.
The premises comprises 2,400 sqm of accommodation and house two GP practices alongside CHP services such as District Nurses, Health Visitors, Chiropody, a large physiotherapy suite, pharmacy and Coffee Shop built by Stewart Milne Construction.
The developers were Medical Centre’s Scotland and Wallace Whittle provided a full Mechanical & Electrical design consultancy services as part of our framework agreement with them.

In stark contrast to the doom and gloom merchants, the Sheraton owners are taking a much more positive approach to the current troubles taking advantage of a potential lull in business to carry out much needed facelift of the hotel.
Part of these works, the iceberg tip, is remodelling bedrooms etc…, we are involved in delivering the new building services for the 250 plus bedrooms, with new heating/cooling, bathrooms and lighting and IT installations all very tastefully done.
The bulk of the project however is a full refurbishment of their existing central plant and lifts, the majority of which are 25 plus years old.
As could be expected from an organisation preaching the sustainability message our proposals have the potential to make a high impact on the Hotel’s “footprint” with incorporation of high efficiency boilers, CHP, invertor drives, heat pumps, etc… An approach which has been welcomed by operator and owner who have indicated a growing trend for businesses to factor in “green awareness” when selecting conference venues.

Elements Square is a £100m extension (£12million building services) to the Almondvale Centre in Livingston. The centre opened for Christmas trading 2008 and is the first covered retail scheme in the UK to achieve a BREEAM ‘Excellent’ rating.
The sustainable building services design, by Wallace Whittle, integrated the use of passive design measures with active systems to provide high performance low energy environmental systems. We sought to harness the natural environment; daylight, ambient temperature and rainwater, to meet the design brief and our own philosophy of minimising resource consumption in the built environment.
An energy efficient mixed mode approach was adopted, combining the inherent natural air movement within the tall space, with a variable flow displacement ventilation system for peak periods. The sustainable design solution also incorporated; rainwater harvesting for flushing toilets, solar hot water preheating, daylighting, artificial lighting control and under floor heating with a high efficiency condensing boiler.
We believe our building services design for Elements Square has set a precedent for commercially viable sustainable building services design whilst maintaining a high level of performance in the retail environment.

The announcement was made at the annual Scottish Healthcare Conference in Crieff and the award was presented to NHS Greater Glasgow & Clyde by Nicola Sturgeon, Deputy First Minister and Cabinet Secretary for Health and Wellbeing.
The £19m purpose built facility responds to a client brief for an innovative, patient focused facility that would challenge the traditional perception of a mental health hospital, facilitate community integration and provide staff with an attractive working environment.
The final design was achieved through an extensive consultation process involving the main PFI provider Robertson Capital Projects, its design team, NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde and their clinical staff group, technical advisors, patients and patients' representatives.
The hospital was built by Robertson Central with Macmon as Architects and Wallace Whittle providing a full M&E design service for Balfour Kilpatrick, the M&E Contractor.
The six adult, elderly and IPCU wards provide a total of 117 beds, all in single en-suite bedroom accommodation. Facilities also include a patient gym, a therapy kitchen, group and individual therapy spaces, an on-site advocacy service, a multi faith retreat and a family friendly room. The Hub Café, situated in the spacious reception area, is open to patients, visitors, members of staff and the general public.
Anne Hawkins, Director of Mental Health Partnership, NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde, said: "I am delighted that Gartnavel Royal Hospital has won this award, particularly since clinical staff, patients and patients' representatives were instrumental in influencing the final design thanks to their roles in the consultation process."

The Scottish Government has approved the business case for a new £95 million emergency care centre in Aberdeen.
The new-build Grampian Emergency Care Centre will provide a 'one stop shop' for patients, by bringing the accident and emergency department, Acute Medical Assessment Unit (AMAU), ward accommodation and the primary care out-of-hours service (G-Med) under one roof at Aberdeen Royal Infirmary.
Subject to planning approval, work at the Foresterhill site, next to the existing Children's Hospital pictured above (also designed by Wallace Whittle) will start early next year and the new centre is scheduled to start treating patients by the end of 2011.
Wallace Whittle are delighted to be working closely alongside both NHS Grampian and Mackie Ramsay Taylor on this groundbreaking project which means for the first time, all emergency and out-of-hours services will be brought together at a single site, providing seamless state-of-the-art treatment for patients.
The building comprises a new build multi-storey block with a footprint of 2800 sq.m and an overall build area of 16,580 sq.m. It will sit adjacent to the existing Accident & Emergency unit and will be linked to the existing Hospital. The building will be serviced from the existing ARI site infrastructure including an 11kV electricity supply and steam connections and will be integrated into all other life safety systems which are site wide i.e. BEMS, Fire/Smoke control, Fire Alarms, etc

We are pleased to report the successful completion on site of the largest speculative office development in Aberdeen City Centre for many years.
Union Plaza is a landmark development comprising 125,000sqft of Grade A offices with underground parking situated in central Aberdeen.
The building is a striking contemporary Grade A office building designed by Architects Halliday Fraser Munro for Stewart Milne Developments. The development is wrapped around an attractive open courtyard with planters and it has excellent facilities as well as ample private secure parking.
We worked very closely with Halliday Fraser Munro on all visual elements with particular emphasis on lighting both internally and externally. A feature of the main entrance is a full height red glass wall which is internally illuminated by linear LED luminaires.
A large proportion of the building has now been let and we are pleased to announce our involvement with ongoing fit-outs for both Aberdeen Asset Management and Barclays Bank PLC.

In 1991 Wallace Whittle designed the necessary Building Services for Islay's first indoor public swimming pool. Prior to this the hardy folk of Islay had to learn to swim in the sea, which was no doubt character building but a bit tough for our "soft" generation.
The building to house the pool was donated by the McTaggart family then owners of the neighbouring Bowmore Distillery one of the finest Islay Malts. The distillery engineers worked with ourselves to develop a heat recovery scheme utilising warm waste water which originated from Bowmore's private loch, from their processes which via a system of heat exchangers provided heat to the pool water.
3 years ago we were invited back over to assist in engineering further enhancements to the scheme which has resulted in the system now heating pool water, hot water for showers and ventilation supply air. All now controlled from a sophisticated computer based Building Management System.
This year we have been again approached by the Islay and Jura Community Enterprises Ltd, to help then with Phase 3 of the ongoing energy targeting.
At present we are looking at the potential amongst others of introducing a diesel powered CHP unit and a heat pump utilising heat from the sea!
All in the early stages at present, as you can imagine a lot of “mulling over a dram” on this job!

In Glasgow we are currently involved in a major commercial mixed-use development on 110 Queen Street, Glasgow for Valad Property Group.
Located in one of Glasgow's most important conservation areas, and surrounded by mainly Category A buildings, the £40m Queen Street project will provide a stunning new addition to the cityscape.
The aim is to achieve an 'Excellent' BREEAM rating for the building's environmental design and specification, and we are working closely with architects Holmes Partnership to achieve this goal.
The first eight storeys are stone-clad with randomly positioned window openings with a glazed upper section that extends above the lower stone structure with a double-façade made up of full height frameless panels in shades of clear, green and blue.
As can be imagined the building offers some quite significant challenges in terms of appearance and compliance with current energy regulations etc. However it is not one we are shirking form and are at present working alongside the architects to deliver the Clients aspirations.
A decision on the planning application is expected later in the year.

The St James Centre in Edinburgh, once voted one of the ugliest buildings in the U.K., is set for a £1bn overhaul after plans were revealed by owners Henderson Global Investors.
The plans would see the centre transformed from into the lynchpin of a new city quarter with retailers, hotels, apartments and offices. Public squares and rooftop gardens would also be a key feature of the scheme that is believed to be the largest redevelopment in Edinburgh's city centre for half a century.
Thousands of new jobs are expected to be created through the development, which would treble the existing amount of retail space at the centre and open up links with Princes Street, George Street and Multrees Walk.
Wallace Whittle have been appointed alongside architects bdp & Allan Murray Architects, the £850m proposals are based around a modern three-level, five storey galleria modelled on the city's famous Baroque-style crescents as well as similar developments in cities such as Milan.
The plans were revealed for the first time by Henderson Global Investors at the launch of an exhibition in the existing centre on Leith Street as part of an eight-week consultation period. Allan Murray described the ideas, which will see the entire complex, except the John Lewis building, torn down after nearly 40 years.
The unique project provides us with many challenges, not least in developing a common low carbon integrated energy strategy and currently we are looking at providing the entire site with energy including power, ventilation, heating and cooling from a central energy centre utilising CHP machines and Absorption & Electric Chillers.
With a 3 level 1600 space car park created below ground beneath the retail and leisure destinations it is important that we establish engineering solutions which operate efficiently without effecting other elements of the scheme aesthetically or with noise or odours.
The team based in our Edinburgh Office, less than 100 yards from the site, have been proactive and innovative in developing services which will provide a safe and comfortable environment in a sustainable and low carbon manner.
Proposals currently include up to 30 escalators and 25 lifts to transport the visitors and residents through the 18 or so levels of this diverse and exciting scheme.
HGI are confident that SJQ would attract key shops to the city, with the firm predicting that, if given the go-ahead, demolition could begin in 2010 with the quarter completed in 2015.

Wallace Whittle have been appointed to provide design services for the redevelopment of Riber Castle, at Matlock in Derbyshire.
Riber Castle, located 200 metres above Matlock, was designed and built in 1862 by John Smedley from locally quarried Gritstone. Planning consent, for conversion of the English Heritage Listed Building, into twenty six luxury apartments, together with redevelopment of the former outbuildings and castle grounds to provide twenty further residences was granted following a Government Enquiry.
There are a number of ecological issues to be addressed as part of the redevelopment, due to bats and newts having taken up residence in the castle and grounds and work is currently in hand to safely relocate these protected species away from their current habitats, before the work of restoring the castle begins, which is currently scheduled for May 2008.
We are working with the developer on a number of sustainable and renewable energy proposals for the development, as part of our appointment.

We are delighted to be working alongside Knight Frank and TCD Architects for Developer Seletar Shipping on this ambitious scheme to redevelop part of Aberdeen Docklands.
The development comprises around 46,500 sq ft of Grade A office space with integral car parking over six levels. The new open plan office accommodation will be available for lease in individual floor plates ranging from 7,500 sq ft to 14,000 sq ft or in combinations of up to a maximum of 46,500 sq ft. The 4th floor and ground floor space is already "under offer" and significant interest has already been expressed in the remainder, despite the lack of a formal marketing campaign.
Seletar Shipping is keen to ensure that the building is environmentally conscious and will incorporate energy efficient design to minimise the building's carbon footprint and recycling facilities for each floor. Additional features will include full curtain walling at 3rd & 4th floor levels incorporating a roof terrace to both floors, and a full height central atrium featuring a bespoke Helical staircase and water feature. There will also be a catering concession on the 2nd floor overlooking the entrance foyer.
The building will also be fully DDA compliant. Two levels of integral car park offer a generous car parking ratio of one space for every 350 sq ft.
New Horizons House is close to a range of amenities, including the bus and train station and the new Union Square Retail/Leisure Development, the Boulevard Retail Park and the Beach Leisure Centre. Seletar also provide a courtesy bus service which operates between the Waterloo Quay development and the city centre, for use of the occupiers of the development.

Peacock Visual Arts in partnership with the city's arts education and arts development teams are currently developing schemes for a new 'iconic' building in Aberdeen's Union Terrace Gardens.
Wallace Whittle are delighted to be working alongside internationally acclaimed Architects Brisac Gonzales who have been very clever and innovative with the design since the building not only shelves discretely into the existing gardens but will open access to the gardens up considerably in what has always been a sensitive yet neglected part of the city centre.
The environmentally friendly building, which it is intended will harness geo-thermal and solar energy to heat it, will largely be built underground and be no higher than the height of the existing wall along Union Terrace. The council hopes this will create a thriving cultural quarter in the area, with the Art Gallery and His Majesty's Theatre both nearby.

ASDA’s first 'green' store at Shaw in Oldham opened on 3rd August 2007.
The store is the first ASDA store to be constructed from a sustainable timber-frame and Wallace Whittle provided a number innovative design solutions to reduce carbon emissions. These solutions consisted of natural ventilation, north-lights and day-light linking to the sales floor lighting, which are predicted to reduce carbon emissions by 40% and provide a saving in energy costs in the order of £30,000 PA, when compared to a “standard” ASDA store.
Through a series of sensors located around the sales floor, the natural lighting levels achieved from the north-lights are monitored and the lighting levels are automatically adjusted to reduce energy consumption.
A thermodynamic model of the store was produced by Wallace Whittle, using IES modelling software which allowed the design solutions to be modelled and predictions of the carbon emissions and energy savings to be determined.
