We have commenced work on the construction of a new Primary Care Medical Centre Facility to include associated car parking.
There are 3 distinct blocks in this new build. The first of these blocks is a 3 storey glass and copper clad building which will house the GP's on the first and second floor, overlooking the Headfort Golf Course to the East, and a diagnostics centre providing X-rays and scanning services on the ground floor. The second block is a 4 storey building constructed of block and render. This will accommodate the HSE's Primary Care Teams on all four floors. Although, these are two separate organisations there is a synergetic relationship between the two and, for that reason, the two will be linked in the form of a three and a half storey glass atrium with linking bridges at upper levels. This atrium will be a communal entrance space from where visitors will be directed towards the appropriate area through signage and/or porter assistance.
A comprehensive landscaping strategy is also proposed for the development and will provide a mixture of hard and soft landscaped areas around the building.
Client: Primed
Value: €5.5m

Successful under the NHS Scotland Framework initiative, Wallace Whittle will provide full design service for the mechanical, electrical and public health installations at the New Possilpark Health Centre, Saracen Street, Glasgow, for NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde.
The new circa £9million state-of-the-art health and wellbeing centre is scheduled to open in 2012 and will replace the existing health centre in the City’s Denmark Street which was built in the 1970s.
The move is part of wider project work being carried out in the area by Glasgow North Regeneration Area and will be spearheaded by North Glasgow Community Health Care Partnership (CHCP), of which NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde is a partner.
"Saracen Street is a high profile site in Possilpark and its redevelopment will have symbolic importance for the whole community and bring hope for future regeneration of the area".
The services strategy currently being developed will see all natural aspects being enhanced to reduce overall carbon footprint of the building while delivering a facility with a low base running cost.
This will be done with natural daylight and ventilation being introduced throughout the building and incorporation of cross ventilation and large areas of openable windows.
As well as providing BREEAM Excellent we will also provide an energy rating on “B+” with energy usage being reduced at all stages while being provided as far as possible via renewable sources such as Ground source heating, Solar water heating and rain water harvesting.

PLANS for a £110million emergency care centre in Aberdeen have taken a major step forward when the NHS Grampian board approved the full business case for the project.
The scheme – the biggest led by the NHS in the north-east – will now be formally submitted to the Scottish Government for final approval.
Work on site could begin at the end of April, with the centre operational by December 2012.
The 10-storey building will be nearly twice the size of the Royal Aberdeen Children’s Hospital and house a wide range of NHS functions, including the G-Med out-of-hours service, accident and emergency, community and mental health services.
More than 300 hospital beds will be available, replacing 40% of the existing capacity at Aberdeen Royal Infirmary, and three out of four patients will be treated in single rooms.
A high-dependency unit for medical specialities, such as coronary care, is also planned.
Patients in other parts of the north-east will benefit from telemedicine facilities, which will allow specialists in Aberdeen to oversee procedures in community hospitals and clinics.
Wallace Whittle are delighted to be providing a full Mechanical & Electrical services design consultancy for the project working alongside Architects Mackie Ramsay Taylor and Structural Engineers Ramsay & Chalmers.

Building magazine analyzed over 400 construction industry companies, issuing over 15,000 employee surveys, in compiling the 2009 Top 50 Employers list. Wallace Whittle are delighted to be included. Only five Mechanical and Electrical related businesses were selected following the anonymous surveys which addressed social responsibility, job enjoyment, leadership, inspiration, ability to contribute as well as employment benefit packages. WW has one of the lowest employee churn rates of the Top 50 which is reflected in our stability and continuity following a period of rapid growth.
The common feature across the Top 50 is that staff feel good about where they work and this is reflected in how we react with our Clients.
Building magazine also recently published its Top 250 Consultants listings for 2009. Wallace Whittle is still the fifth largest MEP consultant in the UK and moved up to 38th overall Engineer when civil, structural and multi service consultants are included. We are also in the top 40 of all Construction consultants in terms of financial measurements.
The market survey showed new business down 25% and that 20,000 jobs were lost by the Top 250. Also of concern was that total fee income only dropped marginally, as a result of project time lags, and 2010 is predicted to show a sharp fall as new more competitive orders feed through.
